Signs you need to change your panel
Your panel still uses porcelain fuses or old screw-type breakers. These devices no longer properly protect your circuits and have been obsolete for 30 years.
No 30mA residual-current device at the head of the panel. This device has been mandatory since 1991 and saves lives by cutting power in case of a leak.
You have added air conditioners, an induction hob, or an IRVE charging station, but the panel was not sized for these new loads.
You smell burning, the panel face is discolored, or the terminals are blackened. Sign of overload and immediate fire risk.
Water infiltrated the panel after water damage or a leak. Mandatory safety shutdown and replacement of all components.
Your panel dates from before 2000. Standards have evolved: type A differentials, surge protectors, modular breakers. An old panel is a latent danger.
What replacement includes
IP65 watertight panel with modular rail. Expansion capacity to add circuits without additional work.
One breaker per circuit (lighting, sockets, dedicated). Targeted protection: a problem does not affect the entire installation.
High-sensitivity 30mA devices for sockets and bathrooms. 300mA device for dedicated circuits if necessary.
Integrated protection against surges from frequent Mediterranean storms in the Var. Prevents appliance damage.
Installation of a contactor for water heaters and IRVE charging stations that benefit from EDF off-peak rates.
Each breaker is labeled (Living room, Bedroom, Kitchen...). A single-line electrical diagram is provided for any future intervention.

FAQ
Everything you need to know about panel replacement in the Var and PACA
Electrical panel replacement in the Var costs between €800 and €4,500 incl. VAT depending on size and complexity. A 1-row panel for a studio (4 to 8 circuits) costs €800 to €1,500 incl. VAT. A 2-row panel for an apartment (8 to 14 circuits) costs €1,500 to €2,800 incl. VAT. A 3-row panel for a house or villa (14 to 24 circuits) costs €2,800 to €4,500 incl. VAT. This price includes the new IP65 watertight panel, circuit breakers, 30mA and 300mA residual-current devices, type 2 surge protector, day/night contactor, labeling of all circuits, single-line electrical diagram, and compliance certificate. EAD uses Legrand, Schneider, or Hager equipment with 2-year manufacturer warranty. The quote is free and without commitment.
Electrical panel replacement by EAD is completed in a single day in most cases. In the morning, the electrician shuts off the main breaker, removes the old panel, installs the new one with all components, reconnects existing circuits, and tests each breaker and differential. In the afternoon, he performs functional tests, checks ground measurements, and restores power. For complex panels (3 rows and more) or commercial premises, the project may extend to 2 days. EAD schedules the intervention in advance to minimize power cuts. For primary residences, we often schedule replacement on Friday so the client has the weekend to organize if needed.
No, electrical panel replacement is an operation reserved for a qualified and authorized professional electrician. In accordance with NF C 15-100 standard and the decree of June 14, 2011, only a professional may perform work on a dwelling's electrical installation. Panel replacement by an unqualified individual is dangerous (risk of electrocution, fire) and invalidates the compliance certificate required for sale or insurance. Furthermore, EDF and insurers require a professional's certificate for any modification of the main breaker. Using EAD, a certified RGE electrician, guarantees compliant, safe work recognized by all authorities and insurers.
The type AC residual-current device detects alternating current leaks (sinusoidal) and is suitable for lighting and heating circuits. The type A device detects both alternating and continuous current leaks emitted by modern power electronics appliances: induction hobs, air conditioners, IRVE charging stations, washing machines, heat pump water heaters. Since the NF C 15-100 2002 edition, type A is mandatory for circuits supplying power sockets and appliances with continuous components. EAD systematically installs type A devices at the head of the panel to guarantee optimal personal protection. The price difference between an AC and an A type is €15 to €30 per device — a minimal investment for maximum safety.
Yes, absolutely. The Var and the French Riviera are among the most storm-prone regions in mainland France, with about ten intense storm episodes each summer. A type 2 surge protector installed at the head of the panel protects your entire electrical installation against indirect surges (lightning striking nearby and propagating through EDF lines). Without a surge protector, your electronic appliances (TV, computers, internet box, air conditioner, IRVE charging station) can be severely damaged. The cost of a quality type 2 surge protector (Legrand, Schneider, Hager) is €80 to €150 incl. VAT installed. EAD strongly recommends surge protector installation in all Var and Alpes-Maritimes homes. It is an economical protection that avoids much more costly damage.
A 30-year-old electrical panel (from the 1990s) generally requires complete replacement rather than partial renovation. Here's why: old panels have non-standard dimensions that do not allow installation of modern modules (type A differentials, surge protectors), the modular rail is often rusted or deformed, and the rear connections are worn. Moreover, a 30-year-old panel was typically designed for 6 to 9 kVA power, while modern homes require 12 to 18 kVA with the addition of air conditioning, induction, and IRVE charging stations. EAD recommends complete replacement for panels over 25 years old. For panels 15 to 25 years old in good condition, partial renovation (adding rows, replacing differentials) may suffice.
